Hello everybody! My name is Duarte and I was born and brought up in Lisbon, Portugal. I communicate in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, and a smidgen of German and Italian. After departing Lisbon in 2014, I resided in Berlin, Germany for 6 years, where I turned into a Portuguese instructor. I relocated to Madrid, Spain in March 2020.
I adore instructing Portuguese to all varieties of proficiency levels and group sizes, and I believe acquiring any language enhances one's life significantly! I've always relished mastering other languages, and it's a delightful experience for me to impart knowledge of my own.
Since commencing teaching, I've encountered learners from all corners of the globe, with diverse levels, backgrounds, aptitudes, and shortcomings - from complete novices who embarked from ground zero (and one year later were engaging in discussions with me on a diverse array of subjects) to exceedingly advanced learners who sought assistance in exam preparation.
My approach concentrates on verbal communication and utilizing the language - the conversational topics can be profoundly language-focused (you might say "textbook" focused - daily routines, your weekends, traveling, etc.) and intertwined with Portuguese culture. Grammar, reading, writing, and vocabulary are immensely crucial, but my aim and primary focus are for the learner to converse as much as feasible, within a secure, enjoyable, and engaging setting, while assimilating and refining the other facets of the language.

A learning environment should be calm but lessons should be fun and interesting, and that is how I like to teach my students.

Languages provide a unique way to express oneself, relate to culture and enlighten different world perspectives. I have a strong zeal for language education, and speak Portuguese, French, and English fluently, understand Spanish and I am now learning German. I have lived in four different countries and this has been an exciting and challenging experience to immerse myself in new cultures and languages. I have also developed and learnt different techniques to increase the efficiency of my language learning skills and I am keen to share this with students.
At University, I specialised in Neuroeducation, where I learnt various methods and techniques to understand how the brain learns best and how to teach languages effectively. For years, I’ve been applying this knowledge in my training and tutoring sessions for students across the world. I seek to enhance my students’ learning experience with native and niche Portuguese expressions complemented with an insight into the Portuguese culture!
First and foremost, I listen carefully to students’ requests and assess their favourable learning method to achieve their goals! I evaluate each student's level and assess what their difficulties are and then provide the material, methods and techniques that are needed for students to succeed! However, what I find especially important is paying attention to students' interests and motivations, to make learning fun and ensure they get the most out of this beautiful language.

Olá! My name is Carolina and it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Portuguese, and I have been teaching my mother tongue for over 5 years at university level. I like to diversify the materials I use as much as possible to focus on all different aspects of the language, but I tend to prioritize speaking practice. I have taught courses as diverse as Spoken Portuguese, Advanced Writing, Portuguese Culture/Literature, and even Sports Readings in Portuguese. Your language goals will always play a part when planning our lessons, so don't hesitate to tell me what you expect.
If you plan on visiting Portugal as a tourist or have Portuguese speaking friends/relatives you may prefer a conversational approach, but if you're interested in using the language for business, you may be interested in learning how to compose an e-mail in Portuguese (an underestimated art form). No matter what your motivation to learn Portuguese is, I am keen in hearing about it. I'll also try to accomodate your interests as much as possible.
If you are curious about the story of how I became a Portuguese teacher, read ahead:
I studied Modern Languages at the University of Coimbra (look it up; it's one of the oldest universities in Europe!) and Literature at the University of Glasgow (quite a stunner as well). One day, a Chinese friend at the pub asked me whether I'd like to apply to his home university, all the way in China, as a Portuguese lecturer. I said 'no way,' so naturally, I ended up moving there shortly after and living in the beautiful city of Harbin for 3 amazing years. Not only did that experience provide me with adventure, but also a lifelong calling: I have loved teaching ever since. After returning to Portugal, I taught for two years at Beijing Sport University (online). Now I work as a freelance online teacher and divide my time between Portugal and Sweden.

1-on-1 lessons are perhaps the best way to improve speaking skills, and because of this many students use LanguaTalk to learn to speak Portuguese fluently. That said, some students have other, more specific goals. Tell your tutor what your goals are and they'll tailor the lessons to your needs. Most tutors can help with any of the following:
New to LanguaTalk? You'll have one credit for a free trial. Most tutors offer a trial for free. If they do not, they’ll offer a trial session at a discount compared to their usual hourly rate.
Trial sessions last 30 minutes. They allow you to assess whether the tutor is a good fit for you, and get a feel for learning online. The tutor will assess your level and aim to understand your needs and interests so that they can customise any lessons you decide to take. You'll be encouraged to speak in Portuguese as much as possible, but of course you can speak in English too!
After your session, if you feel that the tutor isn’t quite right for you, you can simply book a trial with someone else.
Most of the Portuguese tutors on our site are able to teach students of all levels. When you click on a tutor's profile you'll see if certain levels are not supported. For example, certain tutors cannot teach complete beginners.
Likewise, you can also see on the tutor's profile whether they're suitable for all ages. Online Portuguese lessons are sometimes taken to support school/college studies. Usually, the tutor will be able to customise the lessons to follow the material and topics covered in the student's exams. Please note that as per our Terms & Conditions, students who are under 18 must get permission from a legal guardian before booking.
Lessons are taught 1-on-1 so that you receive your tutor’s full attention and can make fast progress. Communicating via video call, you’ll be able to talk to your tutor and share learning materials as if you were in the same room.
The tutors vary in terms of their teaching methods, resources, experiences, and personalities. So we suggest you look at several profiles to choose the best tutor for you. Whichever Portuguese tutor you pick, they'll aim to tailor the lessons to your individual needs.
The vast majority of students take 55-minute lessons. But some tutors also provide the option of 30-minute lessons. If they do, you’ll see this noted on their profile (below their pricing and above the ‘Buy Lessons’ button).
55-minute lessons are recommended for most students. In general, we only suggest considering 30-minute lessons if they’re for your child, or you have an intermediate level and only want conversation practice.
We want students to have an exceptional learning experience on LanguaTalk, so we only accept the very best tutor applications. Though we consider qualifications and experience, we place equal value on communication skills, personality and reviews from previous students. Almost all tutors are native speakers of the language they teach, and we require that they can speak English too.
Each tutor is different - they have different backgrounds, strengths, teaching methods and personalities. So we suggest you browse several profiles to find the right Portuguese tutor for you.
The beauty of taking lessons online is that you can learn anytime, anywhere. To see tutors who are likely to fit your weekly schedule, use the availability filter at the top. Then when you see a tutor you like, check their profile calendar to make sure their time slots work for you. Some tutors have limited availability as they already have lots of students.
Our booking system is designed to be incredibly easy to use. You can see tutors' available hours in your local time zone. If you choose to book lessons with a tutor, you'll be able to purchase them one at a time, or buy in bulk with a volume discount. You can pay securely by card on our website.
You can manually add bookings to your personal calendar, or if you use Google calendar, you can add bookings automatically with our syncing feature. You'll also be able to receive email reminders to help ensure you don't forget to turn up.
You can reschedule or cancel lessons in a couple of clicks. Note that this can only be done up to 24 hours before the lesson time. This rule is required to protect tutors, who lose income when lessons are cancelled at the last minute.
Sometimes students feel uncertain about learning Portuguese online because they think it’ll be totally different to learning face-to-face. But usually when they try it, they find that the experience is almost the same and they often build a strong relationship with their tutor.
Once you start a video call with your chosen Portuguese tutor online, you’ll be able to communicate with them as if you were in the same room. They’ll usually also share learning resources with you (using Google Docs, YouTube etc.) and you’ll be able to collaborate in real-time.
According to the Foreign Service Institute, if you already speak English, Portuguese is one of the easiest languages to learn. The exact amount of time it will take you to become fluent will depend on many factors, such as your current level, your knowledge of similar languages, your capacity to learn, how you study, and how intensively you study. Some will be able to go from beginner to conversational fluency within a couple of months through intensive study. Others will take longer. Combining 1-on-1 lessons with an online Portuguese tutor with regular self-study is an effective way to learn Portuguese fast.
If you live in the US or Europe, face-to-face Portuguese lessons may cost anywhere between $15 and $40 (USD) per hour. Online tutoring tends to be cheaper than face-to-face because the tutor doesn't need to travel to you. An online Portuguese tutor could cost anywhere from $7 to $30 per hour, but be aware that very cheap tutors may lack experience. On LanguaTalk, Portuguese tutors typically charge between $10 and $25 per hour.
Of course, learning 1-on-1 with an experienced Portuguese tutor is not the cheapest way to learn; you could learn via a free app instead. But if you're serious about learning, nothing beats 1-on-1 Portuguese lessons with a great teacher.
There is no 'best way' to learn a language - it depends on your needs, level and budget. If you can't afford to take lessons, you can use a free app such as Duolingo to build your vocabulary. And to improve your listening skills, you can watch TV and listen to podcasts in Portuguese. But to learn how to actually speak a language, you need to talk to a native speaker on a regular basis and receive accurate feedback so that you improve. If you want to make fast progress, it's best to take 1-on-1 lessons that are tailored to your needs by an experienced online Portuguese teacher.
