Examples: how to conjugate hacer in preterite tense

Here are some examples of conjugating hacer in preterite form:

Ayer no hice mis deberes.

I didn't do my homework yesterday.

El mecánico hizo una revisión minuciosa del automóvil.

The mechanic performed a thorough inspection of the automobile.

Hiciste un gran trabajo la semana pasada.

You did a great job last week.

Note in the last example, there is no 'you' - in Spanish it's common to drop the pronoun as you can infer it based on how the verb is conjugated.

  • Hacer is an irregular verb, making it trickier to learn.

Here's a reminder of what the Spanish personal pronouns mean:

  • yo = I
  • tú = you (informal)
  • él/ella = he/she
  • nosotros/nosotras = we
  • vosotros/vosotras = you (plural, informal, Spain only)
  • ellos/ellas = they
  • Usted = you (singular formal) & ustedes = you (plural formal). These are used much more in Latin America than in Spain - the latter being more informal.
