It basically means an increase or decrease in the number of electrons. for example, it and object has extra electrons, it is going to be negatively charged. if an object has a lack of electrons, it is going to have a positive charge. if you have two objects that are charged differently, they are going to have an exchange of electrons in order to reach an equal distribution of it.
