Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) has traditionally been considered the simplest and most scholastic example of antibody-mediated autoimmune disease. However, AIHA has recently been identified as a greatly heterogeneous disease because of several immunological mechanisms involved beyond antibodies, complement, and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity. In addition, AIHA may be associated with conditions where the immunologic mechanisms are unpredictably involved. Given the many conditions, an accurate diagnostic approach to AIHA is fundamental for a comprehensive risk assessment and proper therapy. In...
