Description: The Flagstaff of 1937 was quite different from the sleepy little railroad town it had once been. Emigrants from Boston had passed through this pine forest near the mountains in 1876 and marked their camp with a pine tree stripped of its bark and branches and crowned with an American flag in honor of the country's centennial. Their flag staff became a landmark and eventually the name of the town.
