Description: Charles Arthur Whitmore Monckton (1873–1936) was a British colonial official and explorer who served in Papua New Guinea (then known as British New Guinea) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Monckton was born in 1873, and was educated at Bedford School in England. In 1895, he moved to British New Guinea, where he initially worked as a recruiter of native laborers for plantations. He later joined the British New Guinea Armed Constabulary, eventually rising to the rank of Resident Magistrate.Monckton spent a significant amount of his time in British New Guinea on expeditions and explorations of the territory.
