Detroit-based Rare Earth brought a funk rock fusion sound to the scene. Motown was looking to expand its repertoire and signed Rare Earth to a yet-to-be-named record label more focused on white rock acts. When members of Rare Earth suggested that they name the record label "Rare Earth," Motown surprisingly decided to do so.
