Â We have been told it was June 19, 1865 that the last slaves in America were told they were free. In 2021 it became a national holiday.
However, it was the date that the last "Confederate slaves" were freed. Slaves in the Union states were not freed until the 14th amendment in December 1865. Slaves in the Indian territory were not freed until 1866.Â
