Groundhog Day has been in existence in the US since the early 1800’s. February 2nd also marked an important date for farmers who celebrated Candlemas Day, which marked the midpoint of winter, halfway between the shortest day and the spring equinox. In olden times during the middle of winter farmers used it to determine whether they would have enough crops to feed their stock before winter was over.
