After living in Austria until 1936, his parents sent him and his brother Peter back to Berlin to stay with their Jewish grandparents, fearing Hitlerβs invasion. As Nazi persecution intensified, their grandfather hid them in a summer camp run by Irma Franzen-Heinrichsdorff, a courageous German woman.
