During the 1860s, photographic studios such as Allen of Westland Row, Foster of Westmoreland Street and Lawrence of Sackville Street provided the source imagery for articles in the Dublin Quarterly Journal of Medical Science. In an era before the advent of photo-mechanical reproduction, the images were published as woodcuts or lithographs or sometimes original prints were tipped into the journal.
