In this talk Dr Cahill explores the figure of the unruly Irish girl in children’s fiction. She will particularly focus on the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, looking at the extraordinary volume of novels published in the period that feature wild Irish girls: girls who disrupt schools, who become artists, who open factories, and who even engage in revolutionary activity.
