It is a Vedic mantra and is said to contain the essence of the Vedas. The Gayatri Mantra is addressed to Savitri. Savitri is the radiant one, the luminous one. Savitri also stands for, one might say, greatness, and also for “driving force.” Savitri is also the name of the sun deity.
