The law considers the married partner as having a vested interest in the well-being of the other partner, and there are volumes of case law defining & protecting that arrangement. So, from a legal point-of-view, “gay marriage” actually strengthens the concept of marriage, overwhelming any societal past-predilections against it. As a society, our definition of “marriage” is evolving, and we are using democracy to determine it as a subjective issue rather than a scientific or legal one.
