After Jesus cleansed the temple, the religious leaders confronted Him and demanded, “By what authority are You doing these things?” Jesus responded with a question of His own about John the Baptist’s authority. They refused to answer honestly because they feared the people and wanted to protect themselves. When they said, “We don’t know,” Jesus replied, “Then I won’t tell you by what authority I do these things.”
