Episode: Self Mummification: How Monks turned into “living” Buddhist Mummies | Sokushinbutsu, Meditation, and Sacrifice
Description: Buddhist Monks used an ascetic self mummification preservation practice called Sokushinbutsu in order to slowly turn themselves into living mummies. Their body would become naturally preserved as a mummy with skin and teeth intact without decay and without the need of any artificial preservatives. Meditation and Buddhist chants were also essential to this ritual.
In order to achieve this process, Mokujiki (木食, “eating of trees/wood”) was observed.
