He has taught American studies, American literature, and creative writing in Germany as well as in the U.S. He directs the annual Seminary Ridge Symposium in Gettysburg and has published several nonfiction books on Lincoln and the Civil War -- one of which, November: Lincoln's Elegy at Gettysburg, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
