While the visit of his brother to Ireland five years earlier had captivated this country, Robert’s influence on Irish politics was instead among the Diaspora - convincing Irish America of its place in the Civil Rights movement.
It was a battle that brought him into conflict with some in Irish America but which also won him many friends.
