Finding Portuguese classes in Madrid that are both effective and affordable can be tricky. Classes are typically in groups, meaning you have limited opportunities to speak. On top of this, you’ll often find certain students dominate the conversation, or ask the teacher endless questions!
LanguaTalk offers a more convenient and effective alternative: 1-on-1 online Portuguese classes with experienced native tutors. You won’t find these tutors available for face-to-face Portuguese lessons in Madrid. LanguaTalk finds the best tutors from around the world. They offer conversational Portuguese classes at cheaper rates because they don’t have to travel to you and they often live in countries with a lower cost of living.
Probably you’re thinking: but are online classes really as effective as face-to-face? You can book a no obligation 30-minute trial session (for free with most tutors) and see for yourself. Classes take place via video call, allowing you to communicate with your tutor and share learning materials, as if you were in the same room. And you can book classes for whenever it suits you.
Below, you can filter to tutors who have availability that fits with your Madrid time zone. Then watch videos, check reviews, and book a trial session.
If you have questions, you can click the 'Help' button in the bottom right. There, you’ll find answers to every question imaginable, and the option of contacting our support team.

Olá! My name is Carolina and it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Portuguese, and I have been teaching my mother tongue for over 6 years at university level. I like to diversify the materials I use as much as possible to focus on all different aspects of the language, but I tend to prioritize speaking practice. I have taught courses as diverse as Spoken Portuguese, Advanced Writing, Portuguese Culture/Literature, and even Sports Readings in Portuguese. Your language goals will always play a part when planning our lessons, so don't hesitate to tell me what you expect.
If you plan on visiting Portugal as a tourist or have Portuguese speaking friends/relatives you may prefer a conversational approach, but if you're interested in using the language for business, you may be interested in learning how to compose an e-mail in Portuguese (an underestimated art form). No matter what your motivation to learn Portuguese is, I am keen in hearing about it. I'll also try to accomodate your interests as much as possible.
If you are curious about the story of how I became a Portuguese teacher, read ahead:
I studied Modern Languages at the University of Coimbra (look it up; it's one of the oldest universities in Europe!) and Literature at the University of Glasgow (quite a stunner as well). One day, a Chinese friend at the pub asked me whether I'd like to apply to his home university, all the way in China, as a Portuguese lecturer. I said 'no way,' so naturally, I ended up moving there shortly after and living in the beautiful city of Harbin for 3 amazing years. Not only did that experience provide me with adventure, but also a lifelong calling: I have loved teaching ever since. After returning to Portugal, I taught online for two years at Beijing Sport University and a few other language schools operating around the world. Now I work as a freelance online teacher and divide my time between Portugal and Sweden.

Oi gente!
I'm an accomplished educator, translator and transcriber in Portuguese, English and French with over 8 years of experience, hailing from the state of Goiás in Brazil. I have a Bachelor's degree in Languages (French and Francophone studies major) and I am currently a Master's degree student in Cultural Studies in France. Immersed in the picturesque city of Bordeaux for more than 3 years now, I've embraced its cultural treasures, complementing my diverse background in music, art and culture.
Throughout my teaching tenure, I've engaged with various age groups and proficiency levels in Portuguese, English, and French. Beginning as an English tutor for high school and college students, I progressed to teaching English across different skill levels and facilitating dynamic conversation classes at a professional institution. Moreover, I had the privilege of serving as a Portuguese language tutor for France Éducation Internationale, an initiative backed by the French government. In 2019, I transitioned to online instruction, mentoring children aged 4-12 in English while also leading French as a Foreign Language (FLE) sessions for small groups and individuals ranging from A2 to C1 levels.
During our first trial lesson, I will make sure to understand your goals, what you like, and how you learn best. I always keep in mind that everyone is different, so I adjust my material for each student. I like using the communicative approach, encouraging conversation right from day one in a suitable way (level-wise). But I am also qualified to focus on grammar and very specific aspects of the language if you desire or if we judge this necessary.
As a language, art and culture enthusiast and professional, in my sessions, you'll delve into Brazilian culture through music, literature, videos, quizzes and many other tools.
Language learning has to be fun, in my opinion. That’s why we will always talk about things that interest and inspire you. If we’re practicing grammar or just talking about something else, I want to make it interesting for you and link the grammatical and formal terms to real-life subjects. Therefore, your emotional filter will be open and as a result your journey will be fun and enriching.
If you feel like you want to embark on this journey alongside me, don't hesitate to schedule that trial lesson.
Falou e tchau tchau.

Oi! Hi! Ciao! My name is José. I lived in Brazil most of my life, in the city of Sao Paulo, and now, after a period in London, I'm living in Turin, Italy. I'm eager to help you learn Portuguese, whether it is for travelling, to speak the language of your loved one, for working or just for fun, no matter what is your level.
From day one, my lessons will be tailored to your goals and interests, to make them engaging and fun and to help you achieve fluency fastly.
I always include bits of culture in our interactions and draw parallels between your knowledge and the culture around the language you are learning, to make the experience richer and to make you feel closer to the native speakers. That is essential!
I also have professional experience in several areas, from hospitality to business consulting, which gave me a lot of flexibility with the language and I will use it to help you improve your vocabulary.
Apart from being a language enthusiast, I am really into music, cooking, and travel. I play the guitar (mainly blues, rock, and bossa nova), I love to cook Brazilian-style barbecue and unknown Italian dishes, and the last places I've been to were Southeast Asian countries on a 5 months trip.
Let's schedule a trial lesson!
Até mais! See you soon! A presto!

See Reviews From StudentsMany students initially have reservations about participating in online Portuguese classes, thinking the experience will be vastly different from in-person classes. However, they often discover that online classes can be just as engaging and effective. In an online Portuguese class, you’ll interact with your teacher and classmates as if you were all in the same room. The teacher may share resources (like articles or videos) and will collaborate with you in real-time using tools like Google Docs or Dropbox Paper, ensuring an interactive learning environment. The biggest benefit is convenience: there is no need to travel, and you can book lessons for when it suits you.
While some teachers on LanguaTalk may offer in-person conversational classes in their local area, the majority specialize in online teaching. This approach is more convenient for them, allowing flexibility and the comfort of working from home. Most teachers are not based in Madrid and are spread across the globe, so if you're looking for a class with LanguaTalk, you should anticipate an online learning experience.
Whilst not always the case, Portuguese classes in Madrid are typically more expensive than online learning options. This is due to the costs associated with using a classroom, as well as travel time and expenses for teachers. Online classes, on the other hand, eliminate these overheads. Additionally, online instructors often live in countries with lower living costs, which can further reduce the price of online classes.
If you prefer in-person learning over online classes, LanguaTalk might not be the best fit for your needs. For local classes, you can search through community boards or local service listing websites. However, we encourage you to explore the convenience and effectiveness of online classes. You can start with a free trial session to experience the benefits first-hand, such as access to a broader range of experienced teachers and potentially lower costs.
New to LanguaTalk? We'll give you a credit for a free trial session. Many, but not all, tutor offer these for free. If they do not, the price will be just 30 percent of their full lesson price, so you can still try a session at minimal cost.
Trial sessions last 30 minutes. They allow you to assess whether the tutor is a good fit for you, and get a feel for learning online. The tutor will assess your level and aim to understand your needs and interests so that they can customise any lessons you decide to take. You'll be encouraged to speak in Portuguese as much as possible, but of course you can speak in English too!
If, after your trial session, you don't feel that the tutor is quite right for you, you can book a trial with another tutor for just 30 percent of their full lesson price.
Lessons are taught 1-on-1 so that you receive your tutor’s full attention and can make fast progress. Communicating via video call, you’ll be able to talk to your tutor and share learning materials as if you were in the same room.
The tutors vary in terms of their teaching methods, resources, experiences, and personalities. So we suggest you look at several profiles to choose the best tutor for you. Whichever Portuguese tutor you pick, they'll aim to tailor the lessons to your individual needs.
On LanguaTalk, you can find exceptional tutors for 1-on-1 Portuguese lessons tailored to your goals and learning preferences. Here’s how to try it for yourself:
1 - Find your ideal tutor by browsing videos, reviews, pricing and availability.
2 - Book a trial. Many tutors offer a 30-minute trial for free; others charge a discounted price.
3 - Take personalised lessons with your new tutor via video call. Or try someone else.
No card is required to book a free trial session. Please only book if you're considering taking lessons. Pricing varies by tutor and you can use the filter to find someone who fits your budget. You can pay one lesson at a time, or buy in bulk for a discount (open a tutor's profile to see their pricing options).
We’re confident you’ll love learning via LanguaTalk. We're trusted by students all over the world because we're transparent. We ask students to rate each lesson, and we display reviews on tutors’ profiles.
99.8% of lesson ratings are 5 stars. Why? Because unlike other platforms, we accept only the top 10% of tutor applications.
To see our full FAQs or get help from our friendly team, click the 'Help' button in the bottom-right. You can also watch students talking about their experiences learning via LanguaTalk below.
The beauty of taking lessons online is that you can learn anytime, anywhere. When you choose a tutor, just check their calendar to make sure that they have available times that fit your schedule. Some tutor have limited availability as they already have a lot of students.
The vast majority of students take 55-minute lessons. But some tutors also provide the option of 30-minute lessons. If they do, you’ll see this noted on their profile (below their pricing and above the ‘Buy Lessons’ button).
55-minute lessons are recommended for most students. In general, we only suggest considering 30-minute lessons if they’re for your child, or you have an intermediate level and only want conversation practice.
