Zoom German classes for adults

Hi, I am Elmar from Austria. With a great passion for teaching German and English, I have been helping students of different levels worldwide.  

For beginners, I promise to take the first step with you with patience, clarity, encouragement, and fun. For intermediate and advanced learners, I can explain complex grammar and perfect your skills from all aspects. For students with specific needs, I am ready to help with language exams, business or daily conversational needs, etc.  

Additionally, I am from the financial industry with decent knowledge in various topics. It will be my pleasure to share my culture and be your Austrian friend!

I am a qualified native German teacher (PGCE) from a town near Dortmund and I have been teaching German as a foreign language for over 30 years in a Grammar school setting in Northern Ireland. I have experience in the following: - 

• Teaching German as a private tutor face to face and online. 
• Teaching students to GCSE and A level examinations in my school and privately.
• Prepared students of all ages for the Goethe Institute level A2 and B1 examination.
• Teaching the Junior and Leaving Higher Certificate in German. 
• Teaching children who were born or had lived in Germany for some time but then moved back to the UK and successfully helped them retain their German and also complete the GCSE and A2 examinations for the Goethe Institute. 
• Teaching adults who have relocated to Germany and needed to pass the B1 examination to apply for Citizenship in Germany.
•  I also have given lessons to students who simply enjoyed learning German for fun and travel. 

My teaching is as varied as my students are. I often use the online version of the textbook recommended  by the Goethe Institute "Berliner Platz" A1, A2 and B1 level. I adapt my learning style to suit individual needs should you prefer conversational German or a more grammar focused lesson. I make the lesson enjoyable by including up to date teaching materials and refer to websites that will give the learner an insight into German culture as well, whenever possible, play quizzes such as Kahoot.

Teaching Approach

There are many ways to teach a lesson. I'm a lover of a varied approach whenever applicable. I can honestly say that I will always do my very best to find suitable methods in order to facilitate comprehension and learning.

Over the course of a lesson, I might use audio files, videos, transcripts, books, worksheets or custom-tailored exercises that I feel are best suited for that particular student. Likewise, I will also train conversation - practical or otherwise.

I highly value being kind, patient, modest and encouraging. I always strive to create an environment that fosters a positive feeling. An inviting atmosphere is essential for learning anything at all. I welcome mistakes students make because it's normal to do so, plus that is one of the best ways to learn something properly.

My ultimate goal for you, as my student, is to enjoy yourself while learning and progressing!

Students are different, and all have their own individual needs and expectations. I see myself as someone who is guiding them along their chosen path. Occasionally prompting them to discover (the beauty of) a concept here and there they might have overlooked otherwise. Helping them to develop long-term strategies that will make them feel accomplished and self-assured.

Qualifications & Experience

I've studied at a German university. I've worked as a full time teacher in German trade schools for many years. I've easily taught more than 4,500 lessons over the years. I taught students from all walks of life, with their ages ranging from fifteen to forty-five years.

Teaching, in general, has always been something that I deeply admire. To be able to help others comprehend a concept, and to contribute to their learning progress, is a meaningful endeavour and deeply rewarding! I enjoy it more than I could ever adequately describe.

 I am a qualified German/Swiss German teacher with seven years of online language teaching experience. Since 1999, in the UK, I have worked in different fields. I started my career as a violinist (Bachelor in Music Pedagogy, Advanced Diploma of Performance), performing as a freelance musician in orchestras (Switzerland) and as a chamber musician, and teaching and preparing young students for ABRSM Grade Exams in the UK. Then, I got into the London film and acting scene and did various supporting gigs at UK Film Studios and on sets in London. In 2017, I trained as a Language Teacher in connection with staying in South Korea, which gave me a new perspective regarding new technologies and online teaching, being geographically independent. In July 2024, I graduated in Law and will be training as a barrister from Sept 2025 - 2027. 

I appreciate being able to communicate with students around the world. I have prepared students for Goethe A2 - C1 exams and Swiss Citizenship Exams, lessons are individually tailored to help students reach their language goals, and we work with German learning books, online videos and texts, media and literature (Easy Readers). There are fewer teaching materials for Swiss German; we use Hoi zäme or voCHabular, both Züridütsch materials or Sali Zäme, Basel dialect. There are also Bern dialect books or song texts, but it's always a bit of a search and mix and match. If you like a clear structure, I suggest you learn German up to about B1/B2 and then try your luck at Swiss German!;)

My name is Anna, I'm from Switzerland. I currently live in Ecuador.

After completing my Bachelors degree for teaching in 2015, I started teaching German, but also English and French.

My courses are based on the level, goals and interests of the student. I focus especially on communication. For beginners, we start with structured sentences and everyday topics. I often talk to advanced students about interests and factual topics. I adapt my courses to the student and according to his/her needs we do vocabulary training, grammar exercises, writing or other tasks. That way allows you to advance quickly and improve your language skills remarkably.

I work with various materials, including a teaching aid that I will share with you online for free.

I love to travel and languages ​​are very important to me. Next to my German classes, I teach yoga workshops, love to read and write, make music, go hiking or travel.

Through my education and travel I have learned a variety of languages ​​including English, Spanish and French. So I know that learning a language can be challenging, but it is totally worth it and a lot of fun!

Ich heisse Anna, bin aus der Schweiz. Ich lebe zurzeit in Ecuador. Nach dem Abschluss an der Universität als Lehrperson im Jahr 2015,  begann ich Kinder und Erwachsene in Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch zu unterrichten.

Meine Kurse richten sich nach Niveau, den Zielen und den Interessen des Studierenden. Die Kommunikation steht bei mir im Fokus. Bei Anfängern beginnen wir mit strukturierten Sätzen. Neben dem Unterrichten gebe ich Yogaworkshops, lese und schreibe gerne, mache Musik, gehe wandern oder reise. Es ist zugleich herausfordernd und schön, eine Sprache zu lernen und es macht viel Spass!

I have been teaching German and Italian for over 15 years at a prestigious Canadian University as well as at a local language school. I have experience teaching all levels and age groups, both in-person and online. 

I aim to incorporate all 5 language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture) in every lesson. Besides teaching the five traditional language skills, I also believe in the importance of developing a sixth skill – strategy awareness and use. By teaching you learning strategies, I try to develop in you the autonomy you need in order to continue exploring the language independently.

I tend to adopt an eclectic approach, whereby depending on the situation, I borrow different techniques from a variety of teaching methods. My PhD in Applied Linguistics and ongoing research in second language pedagogy allows me to stay informed on the latest research developments in the field of second language acquisition and to adopt the most appropriate teaching practices for each teaching and learning situation.

In order to adapt the instruction to the learning context, it is important for me to know my students well. This allows me to account for different personal factors, such as the learners’ age, proficiency level, learning styles, personality, and individual needs. I try to provide a range of learning opportunities that can satisfy the needs of different students. I also believe that there is a time and place for a judicious use of learners’ first languages in the second language classroom. Knowing seven languages often allows me to help students build upon their preexisting linguistic knowledge by drawing parallels between their different native languages and the target language. 

Finally, I believe it is important to develop both learners’ fluency and accuracy. Therefore, I strive to find a balance between emphasizing communicative skills and focusing on linguistic forms. Thus, depending on learners’ needs and goals, I might choose to employ more implicit or more explicit teaching methods.

My ultimate goal as a teacher is to create a friendly and productive atmosphere, in which students have fun and progress in their learning journey.

I do not only teach languages to earn money, it is my passion to teach, to have conversations with people from various countries, to allow someone to learn a new language, to open doors in this global world.

I am a German native, single mom of 2, with more than 10 years of teaching experience and about 20 years of tutoring experience. I have been teaching online for more than 6 years, but also taught in colleges, language schools and many private settings. 

I have lived in the US for 7 years and came back to Germany in 2017. In 2020 I decided to become a full-time online teacher. I teach grammar, vocabulary, prepare you for tests and also for interviews, small talk or travels. I enjoy conversations as much as exam prep.

I have been teaching German ever since I was in high school when I taught German to exchange students. During university, I started teaching group classes to children and teenagers as well as translating and interpreting for the German consulate in Turkey. After graduating from university, I started teaching full-time as an online teacher on different platforms.
