Hello, I'm Irene, and I'm from California. I have a TEFL certificate from the University of Toronto.  

Para estudiantes principiantes, I provide minimal pairs testing, phonics training, and dictation/reverse dictation exercises to develop the first essential ability to recognize the distinct English sounds. I help you build associations to recall the most common English words and phrases as we build a deck of digital flashcards together in the Quizlet program.  I also help you recall this new vocabulary by helping you study with your deck and with other images. I help you take this vocabulary and build interesting simple sentences to express your ideas. 

For students at low-intermediate level and above, I offer conversation practice using the speaking topics from the Internet Teaching English as a Second Language Journal, such as traffic accidents, food, and digital life, as well as conversations on the topics important to you.  In these lessons I am your conversation partner, responding to you with natural comments and questions.   Our goal is for you to practice your recall of English words and phrases in real time, but also for you to practice expressing your way "around" an idea when you can't easily recall the English word or phrase,  Of course, I also provide grammar error correction.  I write the correct sentence in a Google document, so that you or I put the sentences onto flashcards for you to review later.  

To provide you with additional review material, I offer to record our conversation lessons.  

In all these lessons, translation from your native language is used carefully.   Translation can interfere with your ability to start thinking in English.

Hi there! I'm a Native English Teacher from the Unites Sates, with over 12 years of experience teaching students from all over the world. Not only a teacher, but a lover of languages, I speak 3 languages fluently and 5 languages in total. I grew up speaking English and Spanish, and after completing my studies, I decided to move to Hong Kong, where I learned Cantonese (southern Chinese) and taught English for 9 years.

In Hong Kong I taught conversational English as well as English in theater, with an emphasis on natural flowing speech and emotional expression within the dialogues, erasing those old monotone/ robotic style of speaking habits a lot of students picked up in school (no disrespect to the schools! They’ve served their purpose!) I've also taught poetry for students to balance the very technical, Left-brain dominant grammar based lesson with a more expressive, Right-brain dominant and playful form like music and poetry, and theater.

One thing that sets me apart from most English teachers is that I know what it’s like first hand to work and live in a foreign language environment as I've also performed staged dramas in Cantonese! I certainly do know what it’s like to be on stage with all eyes on you, a bunch of native speakers listening to me, who has just learned to speak it a few years ago only! It’s nerve racking at first, but then once you do it, it’s one of the most liberating things you could ever do for your speaking confidence. You really see that communication goes way beyond words! In this era more than ever, communication is key.
