Finding German classes in Tokyo that are both effective and affordable can be tricky. Classes are typically in groups, meaning you have limited opportunities to speak. On top of this, youâll often find certain students dominate the conversation, or ask the teacher endless questions!
LanguaTalk offers a more convenient and effective alternative: 1-on-1 online German classes with experienced native tutors. You wonât find these tutors available for face-to-face German lessons in Tokyo. LanguaTalk finds the best tutors from around the world. They offer conversational German classes at cheaper rates because they donât have to travel to you and they often live in countries with a lower cost of living.
Probably youâre thinking: but are online classes really as effective as face-to-face? You can book a no obligation 30-minute trial session (for free with most tutors) and see for yourself. Classes take place via video call, allowing you to communicate with your tutor and share learning materials, as if you were in the same room. And you can book classes for whenever it suits you.
Below, you can filter to tutors who have availability that fits with your Tokyo time zone. Then watch videos, check reviews, and book a trial session.

I have been teaching German and Italian for over 15 years at a prestigious Canadian University as well as at a local language school. I have experience teaching all levels and age groups, both in-person and online.Â
I aim to incorporate all 5 language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture) in every lesson. Besides teaching the five traditional language skills, I also believe in the importance of developing a sixth skill â strategy awareness and use. By teaching you learning strategies, I try to develop in you the autonomy you need in order to continue exploring the language independently.
I tend to adopt an eclectic approach, whereby depending on the situation, I borrow different techniques from a variety of teaching methods. My PhD in Applied Linguistics and ongoing research in second language pedagogy allows me to stay informed on the latest research developments in the field of second language acquisition and to adopt the most appropriate teaching practices for each teaching and learning situation.
In order to adapt the instruction to the learning context, it is important for me to know my students well. This allows me to account for different personal factors, such as the learnersâ age, proficiency level, learning styles, personality, and individual needs. I try to provide a range of learning opportunities that can satisfy the needs of different students. I also believe that there is a time and place for a judicious use of learnersâ first languages in the second language classroom. Knowing seven languages often allows me to help students build upon their preexisting linguistic knowledge by drawing parallels between their different native languages and the target language.Â
Finally, I believe it is important to develop both learnersâ fluency and accuracy. Therefore, I strive to find a balance between emphasizing communicative skills and focusing on linguistic forms. Thus, depending on learnersâ needs and goals, I might choose to employ more implicit or more explicit teaching methods.
My ultimate goal as a teacher is to create a friendly and productive atmosphere, in which students have fun and progress in their learning journey.

My name is Denise and I am a native German speaker and certified teacher for German as a foreign language. I have taught more than 2,000 classes online with people from all over the world. As a language learner myself (I am learning Spanish), I know how difficult and sometimes frustrating it can be. Are you learning German, but you cannot hold simple conversations? Do you have difficulties understanding native speakers? Start communicating in German, think in German, and feel confident speaking German. Learn grammar, new vocabulary, and typical phrases while you build confidence in speaking.Â
Learning German with me feels like chatting with a friend. Together we'll train to compare opinions, share experiences, and more by using topics related to you. Talking about your life and interests will make learning fun.
My conversational training concept depends on your level and your language learning goals. As your teacher, I can help you talk about your daily life and interests or express ideas and feelings. Also, I will give you texts or articles to discuss during class. This way, I will introduce you to new vocabulary, which we will practice immediately. Â I like to ask tons of questions to give you as much space to talk in German as possible.
Together, we will boost your communication skills, not only the language.

I have been teaching this wonderful language for 11 years and I am certified by the âGoethe Institutâ. I love languages and music. I think that learning makes us grow and be better people. We learn something everyday and that keeps us alive.
I am looking forward knowing you, bis bald, tschĂŒss
See Reviews From StudentsMany students initially have reservations about participating in online German classes, thinking the experience will be vastly different from in-person classes. However, they often discover that online classes can be just as engaging and effective. In an online German class, youâll interact with your teacher and classmates as if you were all in the same room. The teacher may share resources (like articles or videos) and will collaborate with you in real-time using tools like Google Docs or Dropbox Paper, ensuring an interactive learning environment. The biggest benefit is convenience: there is no need to travel, and you can book lessons for when it suits you.
While some teachers on LanguaTalk may offer in-person conversational classes in their local area, the majority specialize in online teaching. This approach is more convenient for them, allowing flexibility and the comfort of working from home. Most teachers are not based in Tokyo and are spread across the globe, so if you're looking for a class with LanguaTalk, you should anticipate an online learning experience.
If you prefer in-person learning over online classes, LanguaTalk might not be the best fit for your needs. For local classes, you can search through community boards or local service listing websites. However, we encourage you to explore the convenience and effectiveness of online classes. You can start with a free trial session to experience the benefits first-hand, such as access to a broader range of experienced teachers and potentially lower costs.
Whilst not always the case, German classes in Tokyo are typically more expensive than online learning options. This is due to the costs associated with using a classroom, as well as travel time and expenses for teachers. Online classes, on the other hand, eliminate these overheads. Additionally, online instructors often live in countries with lower living costs, which can further reduce the price of online classes.
New to LanguaTalk? We'll give you a credit for a free trial session. Many, but not all, tutor offer these for free. If they do not, the price will be just 30 percent of their full lesson price, so you can still try a session at minimal cost.
Trial sessions last 30 minutes. They allow you to assess whether the tutor is a good fit for you, and get a feel for learning online. The tutor will assess your level and aim to understand your needs and interests so that they can customise any lessons you decide to take. You'll be encouraged to speak in German as much as possible, but of course you can speak in English too!
If, after your trial session, you don't feel that the tutor is quite right for you, you can book a trial with another tutor for just 30 percent of their full lesson price.

Lessons are taught 1-on-1 so that you receive your tutorâs full attention and can make fast progress. Communicating via video call, youâll be able to talk to your tutor and share learning materials as if you were in the same room.
The tutors vary in terms of their teaching methods, resources, experiences, and personalities. So we suggest you look at several profiles to choose the best tutor for you. Whichever German tutor you pick, they'll aim to tailor the lessons to your individual needs.
The vast majority of students take 55-minute lessons. But some tutors also provide the option of 30-minute lessons. If they do, youâll see this noted on their profile (below their pricing and above the âBuy Lessonsâ button).
55-minute lessons are recommended for most students. In general, we only suggest considering 30-minute lessons if theyâre for your child, or you have an intermediate level and only want conversation practice.
The beauty of taking lessons online is that you can learn anytime, anywhere. When you choose a tutor, just check their calendar to make sure that they have available times that fit your schedule. Some tutor have limited availability as they already have a lot of students.
