My name is Marina. I have been a French teacher for five years. I taught in Ireland, England, Spain, and Ecuador, with students of all ages and levels, and in settings both informal and formal. I'm new to LanguaTalk but I've been teaching French online for a year as well.

I offer different forms of teaching, depending on your level and preferred learning methods. For example, a beginner who needs structure might benefit from lessons from a written method that mixes grammar, vocabulary, and listening, speaking, reading and writing exercises, while a more advanced student would prefer us to focus on conversation.

A few years ago, when I was in bed at night and almost ready to sleep, I used to ask myself this question : "Why would people want to learn French? Are they crazy?"

Well... Are you? 

It definitely takes guts for someone to take the obscure path of French learning, especially when you know that almost no francophone can speak French perfectly. And it is this courageous desire detected in French learners that made me want to start teaching this language three years ago. In fact, besides the syntactic complexity of this language (which, by the way, is most likely to be a cliché), French is a very poetic language, as it allows countless accesses to figurative speeches (so if you tend to be a little sarcastic at times, this might be perfect for you). Plus, French is cool and sounds fancy too, so... 😗

A little about me. I’m a native French speaker from Northern France, nicknamed “woman with a suitcase” for my love of travel. I’ve been passionately teaching French for three years. Seeing my students achieve their goals and grow confident inspires me.

I also offer French immersion stays in France, giving students a unique chance to practice the language in real-life situations while experiencing French culture, cuisine and traditions. It is an unforgettable way to accelerate learning.

As someone learning two other languages, I know the joys and challenges of mastering a new language. This motivates me to create lessons that are practical, engaging and focused on real progress.

My teaching approach is primarily focused on oral practice. I firmly believe that communication is the key to mastering a language, which is why my lessons are interactive and based on lively, real-life exchanges. Whether through discussions, role-playing, or real-world simulations, I emphasize speaking skills to help you gain fluency and confidence. I have worked with adults, teenagers, and children, adjusting my methods to suit each individual. Teaching younger learners has allowed me to develop fun and creative techniques to make learning French both enjoyable and motivating. 

As an expatriate myself, I understand the challenges of learning a language in an international environment, which allows me to tailor my lessons to the specific needs of each student. It is always a pleasure to be able to have a fluent conversation (or a heated debate) with students who sometimes started as total beginners and to see them acing their exams.

As for the method, I use trusted manuals and activity books because I believe in structure, but also material that suits your interests and tastes - from literature to popular songs, news to scientific articles, series, and movies (subtitled or not), online resources and grammar exercises. Resources are shared on a Slack group where lessons are summarized, and tasks listed. I can also tailor-make lessons for a specific objective like a job interview or a power point presentation.

Teaching French has been my main activity for several years both privately and at the Alliance Française. I am outgoing and chatty, but homework is not optional (at least if you want to improve fast!).
